ON VOTING BAREFOOT

I’ve been voting barefoot for as long as I can remember. There was an older lady at my polling place who had been there for as long as I had lived in the precinct. I didn’t like her, and she didn’t like me, and we did not get along; but she was seriously hard-core about the right to vote. She never said anything about shoes, and I voted unmolested from the beginning.

A few years ago she was training a new poll worker when I came to vote. The new person – loudly and in front of me asked – “Should we let him vote with no shoes?” Ms. Disagreeable answered loudly and definitely, “EVERYBODY VOTES! SHOES OR NO SHOES!”, and that was the end of that. I moved three years ago and nobody has ever said anything at my new polling place.
